Kevin McDonnell Triumphs in Tramore

Kevin McDonnell from Cork City won Round Three of the 2012 Ireland Players’ Championship at O’Shea’s Hotel, Tramore, Co. Waterford, on January 14th.

Kevin was in top form throughout the day defeating his fellow Cork player, Peter Quinn, 5 – 0 in the quarter-finals, Round Two winner Jacko Barry (Dublin) 6 – 3 in the semi-finals and Republic of Ireland World Cup player, William O’Connor (Limerick) 6 – 4 in the final.

In the Ladies’ event Kay O’Carroll was beaten in the semi-finals by the eventual winner, Sharon O’Brien (Kildare) while Ciara Haugh (Mallow) went out at the same stage to the runner-up, Linda Harte (Kilkenny).

Tribute to Mick  ‘Arthur’ Daly

On Tuesday, December 27th.2011, the darting community in Cobh gathered in large numbers at St. Colman’s Cathedral to bid farewell to one of their local players, Mick ‘Arthur’ Daly, who died unexpectedly two days before Christmas.

‘Arthur’  was a true gentleman and was the epitome of everything that is good in the sport of darts.    He was a tireless worker as secretary of the Cobh Darts Association and was always available to help his colleagues on the various darts teams on the Great Island.

Mick, who died suddenly at the young age of 37 years,  was no mean performer on the oche and he picked up many trophies and awards during his short career.

He loved the game of darts and, in particular, he enjoyed playing against the top professionals in exhibition matches. He played against Terry Jenkins and Dennis Priestley in recent exhibitions.

Mick was also an enthusiastic road-bowler and it was only fitting that his colleagues from these two sporting bodies should give him a guard of honour as his remains left the Cathedral and they followed  the funeral cortege en masse to the nearby cemetery where he was laid to rest.

Later that evening as I watched the World Darts Championships on Sky Sports my thoughts once again turned to Mick Daly.

As a darts player he was never going to be a World Champion but he will always be remembered as a true champion in his own World of Darts down in the ‘Holy Ground’.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his family and friends on their great loss.

Slan leat, ‘Arthur’.
