The White House Win Mayo Cup for First
Time
The White House Bar from Swinford won the 2004
Mayo Cup when they defeated the hot favourites, Harp Bar from Castlebar, by five games to three in
an exciting final in Ballyvarry.
The favourites started in great style going 3-1 up
after the firsrt four games and it loked odds-on that the cup would be going back to
Castlebar. But the White House staged a remarkable recovery
and won the next four games without reply.
The Swinford revival started with Frank Price
defeating Martin Gilroy and when Gerry Ronayne tied the match at 3-3 with a win over Ted Hopkins it
was all to play for.
When the consistent Jimmy Flynn missed his doubles
for the Harp in the next match Pat Glavey stepped in to put the White House ahead and Pat McDonnell
wrapped the title up for the Swinford lads with victory over Ger Nestor in the last game.
The White House captain accepted the trophy on
behalf of a jubilant bunch of supporters.
Congratulations to Frank O´Reilly on organising a
fantastic tournament.
