Final Round of Players’ Championship

 

Clonmel Park Hotel

 

The final round of matches in the 2011 Ireland Players’ Championship will be held on Sunday, May 8th., at the Clonmel Park Hotel in Tipperary.

 

The closing date for receipt of entries for the Men’s Championship is Wednesday, May 4th., while entries for the Ladies’ and Youths’ Championships will be accepted at the venue on the day.

 

Places in the Grand Finals of all three Championships are still up for grabs and the qualifiers will be known after the Clonmel event.

 

The Top 32 in the Men’s Rankings, Top 16  in the Ladies’ Rankings and the Top 8 in the Youths’ Rankings will be invited to compete in the Grand Finals on Sunday, June 26th., at the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny.

 

In addition the players ranked 9th. to 24th. will be invited to compete in the Youths’ Plate. Players must have competed in at least two previous rounds to be eligible to compete in the final round in Clonmel.

 

 

Cope House Win Donegal League Cup

 

Cope House – Winners in South West Donegal

 

The Cope House retained the SWDDL League Cup in Donegal following a 5-4 victory over Roartys in The Bridge Bar.

 

Roartys were favourites to lift the title as they were unbeaten all season and they started  well taking the first two doubles with Anthony Gallagher/Kieran Carr and John Con/Michael Byrne defeating Philip/John D Gallagher and Rodney McBrearty/Irwin Muirhead. The third doubles went to Gerry McBrearty/Emmett Quigley of the Cope against James P Byrne/Kevin Squires.

 

Roartys went 3-1 up following a 3-1 win for John Con against Philip Gallagher, then The Cope levelled the match at 3-3 with 3-1 wins for Rodney McBrearty against Antony Gallagher and Irwin Muirhead against Kieran Carr. Irwin had two 180’s in this match.

 

Michael Byrne put Roartys 4-3 up when he came from 2-0 down to beat John D Gallagher 3-2 and Emmett Quigley tied the match up at 4-4 with a 3-0 win over Joe Mockler.

 

In the deciding match it was Stephen Muirhead against James P Byrne, the game went to 2-2 and it was Stephen who held his nerve to finish double four to take the cup back to Killybegs.

Most 180’s: 11 Andrew Gillespie (O’Donnell’s)

League Semi Finals:

Roartys  5 – 3  Sliabh Liag ; Cope House  5 – 2  Big Francies.

 

 

Great Turnout in Tramore

 

O’Shea’s Hotel

 

here was a great turnout of players for the annual Spring Darts Festival at O’Shea’s Hotel in Tramore and as usual the sun came out to welcome all the darts visitors to the Sunny Southeast.

 

The Festival commenced on the Friday night with doubles competitions and they ended in a double victory for Wexford with Jason Cullen and Andrew McCormack winning the men’s event and Martina and Karen Scallan capturing the ladies’ title.

 

Meath – Winners of Men’s 7-a-side

 

The Inter-Counties Challenge competitions were the main events on Saturday with thirty teams competing and new names being added to the Honours List.

 

Meath won the 7-a-side Men’s Challenge with a 4 – 2 victory over Wexford.

Wexford – Winners of Ladies’ 5-a-side

 

Wexford ladies’ team won the 5-a-side Challenge with a 3 – 2 win over the reigning champions Kildare.

 

Lily Connolly with William O’Connor – winner of the Damian Connolly Memorial Trophy.

 

Sunday was Singles’ day with the Damian Connolly Memorial Singles being the featured event.

 

William O’Connor made it 3-in-a-row for Limerick in the Men’s Singles with a 6 – 1 victory over Shane O’Connor in the final.

Linda Harte {Runner-up} and Kay O’Carroll {Winner}

 

 

Kay O’Carroll won the Ladies’ Singles with a 4 – 3 victory over Linda Harte.

 

Murty Browne {Runner-up} and Stephen Lennon {Winner}

 

 

Stephen Lennon won the Youths’ Singles with a 3 – 2 win over Murty Browne.

The next event at O’Shea’s Hotel will be the Tramore Autumn Festival on the weekend of September 24/ 25/ 26th. and it will include the very popular Tramore Mixed Pairs Championship and Under-21 Singles Championship.
