Irish Teams Heading for USA

 

 

Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are sending teams to the WDF World Cup which will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina, from September 23rd. to 26th.

 

35 countries will be competing in the event which comprises of competitions for Men, Ladies and Youths.

The Irish teams are as follows:

 

Northern Ireland:

Men - Daryl Gurney, Gary Elliott, Glen Rodney and John Elder.

Ladies - Denise Cassidy and Grace Craine.

 

Republic of Ireland:

Men - Connie Finnan, Martin McCloskey, Sean Wilson and Steve McDonnell.

Ladies - Angela DeWard and Nicola O'Donovan.

Youths - Paddy Meaney and Aoife Ryan.

 

 

City West Opens New Centre for World Grand Prix

THE 2009 Skybet World Grand Prix will now be staged in the brand new Citywest International Event & Convention Centre.

  

Dublin's Citywest Hotel has hosted the World Grand Prix since 2001, with the Sky Sports-televised event being played in the unique format where players need to both begin and end a leg with a double.

 

Ticket sales for the World Grand Prix have boomed in recent years, with 2008 seeing record crowds flock to the venue.  

 

Following the recent completion of the Citywest Hotel IECC, the 2009 Skybet World Grand Prix - to be held from October 5-11 - has now been moved into that arena, with the capacity doubling to accommodate over 3,000 fans.

 

The quarter-finals on Friday October 9 have already sold out of tickets, with other sessions throughout the week proving popular for the Stg. £350,000 event.

 

Play in the Skybet World Grand Prix begins on Monday October 5 and Tuesday October 6 with the first round, and the second round will be played on Wednesday and Thursday.

 

Friday's quarter-finals are then followed by the two semi-finals on Saturday evening and the final on Sunday October 11.

Great Weekend for Irish Players in International Events

The first weekend in September turned out to be a great weekend for Irish darts players at International events in Bridlington {England} and Salzburg {Austria}.

 

Martin McCloskey from Donegal was one of four players to qualify for the Lakeside World Championships at

the WDF/ BDO event in Bridlington and Connie Finnan from Limerick reached the quarter-finals of the Winmau World Masters at the same venue.

 

Sunday, September 6th., was the final date on the PDC Calendar for qualification for the SkyPoker World Grand Prix at the City West Hotel in Dublin and all eyes were on the Irish players who were battling for four places in the Players' Championship in Austria.

 

Brendan Dolan from Fermanagh qualified in style when he won through to the semi-finals where he lost out to the eventual winner Jamie Caven.

 

The other three qualifiers for the City West are Mick McGowan, John Magowan and Jacko Barry.
