Great Weekend in Tramore

 

The 24th Annual Tramore Autumn Festival was held at O’Shea’s Hotel in Tramore, Co. Waterford, on the weekend of September 23rd. to 25th.

 On Friday night Men’s and Ladies’ Doubles competitions were organised with victory going to Alan Delaney and Ryan Burke in the Men’s competition and Sharon O’Brien and Susan McKenna taking the Ladies’ title.

The Mixed Pairs Championship was keenly contested on the Saturday with victory going to Kay O’Carroll and John Magowan who defeated Ann and Noel Redmond in the final.

Paddy Meaney – Winner of Under-21 Singles

 

Paddy Meaney from Kilkenny won the Under-21 Singles Championship for the third time when he defeated Stephen Lennon (Kildare)  in the final.

 

The two finalists qualified to compete in the PDC Youth Tour event in Killarney on October 15th.

On the final day of the Festival Benny Grace had a long-overdue win in the Men’s Singles when he defeated Stephen Holland from Cork and Sharon O’Brien (Kildare) won the Ladies’ Singles with a win over Berni McDonald (Carlow).

Tom Kirby Memorial Gathering on Tramore Beach.

On Saturday, September 24th., family, friends and darting colleagues of the late Tom Kirby  gathered on the beach in Tramore in memory of Ireland's darts legend who was a regular  contestant at the Tramore Festivals.

John McGinley is the 2011 Bridge Bar Cup Champion

John Con McGinley won the Bridge Bar cup for the second time with a 6-3 win over Adrian Byrne in the Bridge Bar, Carrick, Co. Donegal, on Friday 16th September last.

John went 4-0 up in the final with, 20, 10, 10 and 20 dart finishes and also had a 180 in the second  leg before Adrian took the next two legs with double 1 and 4 checkouts.

 

The next two legs were shared to make it 5-3 before John took out double 5 to clinch the title.

 

Defeated semi finalists were two times winner Mike Naulty who was beaten 5-3 by John and Rodney McBrearty (who put out holder James Byrne earlier in the evening) who lost 5-1 to Adrian.

Connie and Shane Qualify for City West Final

The annual Tom Kirby Memorial Irish Matchplay Championship was held at the Green Isle Hotel, Dublin, on Sunday, August 28th., with 138 players battling for a place in the Ladbrokes.com World Championship in December.

 

Players affiliated to the I.N.D.O., N.I.D.O. and the PDPA played side by side in this prestigious event which is organised in memory of the great Irish player Tom Kirby and they treated the large attendance to a feast of great darts.

 

After a superb afternoon’s entertainment the field was whittled down to the semi-final placings which included two players, Connie Finnan and Martin Heneghan, who will be representing the Republic of Ireland in the WDF World Cup at the end of September, and two PDPA members, William O’Connor and Shane O’Connor, who are regulars on the PDC Tour.

 

In the first semi-final Connie Finnan defeated William O’Connor by six legs to four in an all-Limerick battle while in the next semi Shane O’Connor had a similar victory over Martin Heneghan.   Connie and Shane will now contest the final of the Tom Kirby Memorial on stage at the City West Hotel in Dublin prior to the final of the World Grand Prix on Sunday, October 9th.

Ryan Maher Qualifies for World Youth Championship

The Irish Under-21 Matchplay Championship was also held at the Green Isle Hotel,

Dublin, over the weekend with victory going to Ryan Maher from Dublin who defeated Martin Heneghan {Mayo} 4 – 1 in the final.

 

In the semi-finals Ryan defeated Paddy Meaney 4 – 2 and Martin had a 4 – 1 victory over Stephen Lennon.   Ryan Maher will now represent Ireland in the last 64 of the World Youth Championship in November.

Mickey Mansell Wins in Omagh

Mickey Mansell won the Irish Open competition at the Weigh Inn Festival of Darts in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, with a 7 – 3 victory over Barry Copeland in the final.

 

Sixty four players competed in the event over two days with a Round Robin on the Saturday And the last sixteen competing in the knock-out stage on Sunday.

The dates for the 2012 Ireland Players’ Championships have been announced with the prestigious 4-Star Mount Wolseley Hotel, Spa and Country Club in Carlow being added to the list for Round Two.

The fixtures are as follows :-

Round One – Sunday, October 23rd., 2011.   Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh, Co.Tipperary.

Round Two – Sunday, November 27th., 2011.  Mount Wolseley Hotel, Tullow, Co.Carlow.

Round Three – Saturday, January 14th., 2012.  O’Shea’s Hotel, Tramore, Co.Waterford.

Round Four – Saturday, March 3rd., 2012.  Silver Springs Moran Hotel, Cork.
