Another Championship Victory for Limerick

Jimmy Murphy and Mick Barry

 

 

Jimmy Murphy kept the Limerick flag flying at the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny when he defeated Mick Barry from Dublin in the final of Round Five of the 2009 Ireland Players' Championship.

 

A total of one hundred and seventy players competed on the day and matches were once again played at a very high standard.

 

In the semi-finals Murphy defeated John Elder while Barry had a victory over Aodhagan O'Neill.  Peter Quinn [Cork} recorded a maximum finish of 170 on the day but nobody came close to capturing the Jackpot Prize of € 800 for a 9-dart check-out.

 

This prize will now increase to € 1,000 for Round Six in Dublin on May 16th.

 

 

 

 

Kay O'Carroll and Sharon O'Brien

 

In the Ladies' Championship Sharon O'Brien {Kildare} came out on top again with a win over Kay O'Carroll from Cork in the final.

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Caroline Breen {Galway} and Denise Cassidy {Fermanagh}

 

Paddy Meaney

 

44 players competed in the Youths' Championship with Paddy Meaney {Kilkenny} taking the honours with a 3-1 win over James Gearon {Tipperary} in the final.  

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Ryan Courtney and Craig Casey.

 

 

 

 

Change of Date for Grand Finals

 

Please note that the date for the Grand Finals of the 2009 Ireland Players' Championships has been brought forward to Saturday, August 1st., due to circumstances beyond our control.

Ian Dobson Wins Damian Connolly Memorial

The inaugural Damian Connolly Memorial Men's Singles competition was won by Ian Dobson (Limerick) when he defeated Dermot Kelliher (Kerry) in the final at the Tramore Spring Festival at O'Shea's Hotel.

 

128 players competed on the day and the beaten semi-finalists were Damian O'Driscoll (Cork) and Steve McDonnell (Meath)

Sharon is still Tops

 

Sharon O'Brien (right) was once again the leading lady in Tramore when she captured the Ladies' Singles

title with a victory over Gemma Keogh {Kilkenny}.   She also captained her Kildare team-mates to victory over Wexford in the final of the Ladies' Inter-Counties Challenge.

 

55 players competed in the Ladies' Singles and Sharon was in unbeatable form as she defeated Nicola O'Donovan {Cork} in the semis before taking the title with a 4-0 victory in the final.    The other beaten semi-finalist was Maeve O'Connor {Carlow}

 

Nineteen teams competed in the Ladies' Inter-Counties Challenge and Kildare won the title for the second time with a 3-1 victory over Wexford in the final.    The beaten semi-finalists were Limerick and East Cork.

 

 

Dublin Win Men's Challenge

Twenty nine teams competed in the Men's Inter-Counties Challenge in Tramore and the Dublin Patriot's team came out on top with a 4-2 victory over the 2008 Champions Kildare.

 

In the semi-finals the Dubs defeated Wexford (A) 4-2 while the Lily-Whites had a 4-3 win against Wexord (B).

Youths' Double for Paddy Meaney

Paddy Meaney from Kilkenny recorded a double victory in the Under-21 and Under-18 Singles competitions for the second consecutive year at the Tramore Spring Festival.

 

In the Under-21 Singles he defeated David Stack (Cork) 3-1 in the final while he had a similar win over another Cork player, Ryan Courtney, in the Under-18 decider.

 

 

 

 

Benny Wins in Wexford

 

Benny Grace {Kilkenny} came close to a 9-dart check-out in the final of the David Kehoe Memorial Singles Tournament at the Millennium Bar, Davidstown, Co. Wexford.

 

In the first leg of the final against Martin Murphy {Kildare} Benny hit treble 20's with his first seven darts but clipped the wire on treble 19 to set him up for the elusive finish.

 

Benny won the competition with a 5-2 win over Martin.

 

The beaten semi-finalists were local players, Alan Doyle and Dominic Fenlon.   On the same day Martina Scallan defeated Wexford team-mate Ashling O'Leary in the ladies' final.

Northwest Open Doubles

Sean Gallagher and Justin McGuigan won the 3rd. Annual Northwest Open Doubles at the Central Hotel

in Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, when they defeated Felix McBrearty and Eamon McGovern 5-4 in the final

 

 

Big Tom Performs the Honours in Castleblaney

128 players competed in the annual Ted Finnegan Memorial Singles at the Oram Community Centre in

Castleblaney, County Monaghan, and the first prize of € 500 went to Martin Carvill.

 

 

 

Aodhagan Triumphs in Roscommon

Aodhagan O'Neill from Cavan won the annual Martin Kelly Memorial Cup in Roscommon when he defeated P.J. Kavanagh from Mayo 6-2 in the final at the Hollywood Bar.

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Mark Finneran and David Concannon and the prize for the Best Lady went to Barbara Victory

The two players that contested the final of the 2009 Bennie Gillespie Individual Darts Cup.......LtoR: Mike Naulty (winner) and John Mc Ginley (runner-up).......

 

Mike Naulty Wins in Donegal

 
 
 

In South West Donegal the annual Benny Gillespie Cup was won by Mike Naulty who defeated John McGinley on a 5-3 scoreline in the final.

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Anthony Gallagher and Noel McDevitt.
