Third Time Lucky for John Elder

 

 

Northern Ireland International John Elder from Antrim won the 2009 Ireland Players' Championship when he defeated Peter Quinn from Cork 6 - 4 in the final at the Springhill Court in Kilkenny.

 

Seamus O'Carroll {Springhill Court Hotel}, Nuno Monteiro {Springhill Court Hotel}, John Elder and Joe Coyne.

 

 

 

Having lost out in the finals of 2006 and 2007 Elder achieved his goal in this year's Championship with some very impressive performances throughout the afternoon.

 

In the semi-finals he defeated Garrett Gray from Dublin 6-4 while Quinn had a similar victory over Cavan's Aodhagan O'Neill.   Peter Quinn recorded the Highest Check-out of 170 in the tournament.

 

Denise Cassidy from Fermanagh made it a Northern Double when she defeated Caroline Breen from Galway 4-1 in the Ladies' final.

Seamus O'Carroll, Nuno Monteiro, Denise Cassidy and Joe Coyne.

 

 

 

In the semi-finals Caroline eliminated last year's winner, Sharon O'Brien {Kildare}, on a 3 - 2 scoreline while Denise had a 3 - 0 win over Maureen Kelly {Carlow}.

 

 

Youths' Double for Roscommon

 

For the second year in succession Roscommon recorded a double win in the Youths' events at the Ireland Players' Championships in Kilkenny.

 

Mark Finneran (right) defeated the tournament Paddy Meaney {Kilkenny} to claim the Youths' Championship crown while Thomas Concannon  below retained the Youths' Plate with a 3-0 win over Dylan Rutledge {Dublin}.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The beaten semi-finalists in the Championship were Martin Heneghan and Jason Hahessy while in the Plate Cathal Murphy and Paul Donovan lost out in the last four.

Hat-trick of Wins for Limerick

Gary Tipping , Connie Finnan and Joe Coyne

 
Connie Finnan made it three wins in a row for Limerick players when he defeated Gary Tipping from Down 6-4 in the final of Round Six at the Green Isle Hotel in Dublin.

 

In the semi-finals Connie defeated Ricky Dunlop 6-1 while Gary had a 6-5 victory over William O'Connor in the other match.
 

Kay O'Carroll and Denise Cassidy

 
Kay O'Carroll {Cork} won Round Six of the Ladies' Championship with a 4-3 win over Denise Cassidy {Fermanagh} in the final. The beaten semi-finalists in this event were Gemma Keogh and Susan McKenna.

 

Paddy Meaney

 

Paddy Meaney {Kilkenny} made it five wins out of six in the Youths' Championship with a 3-0 victory over Martin Heneghan {Mayo}.    The beaten semi-finalists were James Gearon and Paul Donovan.
 

 

Another Championship Victory for Limerick

 

Jimmy Murphy and Mick Barry

 

Jimmy Murphy kept the Limerick flag flying at the Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny when he defeated  Mick Barry from Dublin in the final of Round Five of the 2009 Ireland Players' Championship.

 

A total of one hundred and seventy players competed on the day and matches were once again played at a very high standard.

 

In the semi-finals Murphy defeated John Elder while Barry had a victory over Aodhagan O'Neill.     Peter Quinn [Cork} recorded a maximum finish of 170 on the day but nobody came close to capturing the Jackpot Prize of € 800 for a 9-dart check-out.

 

This prize will now increase to € 1,000 for Round Six in Dublin on May 16th.

 

Kay O'Carroll and Sharon O'Brien

 

In the Ladies' Championship Sharon O'Brien {Kildare} came out on top again with a win over Kay O'Carroll from Cork in the final.

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Caroline Breen {Galway} and Denise Cassidy {Fermanagh}

44 players competed in the Youths' Championship with Paddy Meaney {Kilkenny} taking the honours with a 3-1 win over James Gearon {Tipperary} in the final.  

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Ryan Courtney and Craig Casey.

 

 

 

 

Change of Date for Grand Finals
 
Due to circumstances beyond our control the Grand Finals of the 2009 Championships have been brought forward to Saturday, August 1st., at the Springhill Court Hotel, Kilkenny.
 

Limerick Players Take a Giant Leap

Radaslaw Szaganski, Cyril McMahon {Clonmel Park} and William O'Connor

 

At the Clonmel Park Hotel in Tipperary Limerick-based players, William O'Connor and Radaslaw Szaganski, took giant leaps towards qualifying for the Grand Finals of the 2009 Ireland Players' Championship when they battled their way to the final of Round Four.

 

O'Connor won the final on a 6-4 scoreline and he is now joint fourth on the Rankings List while Szaganski is in 14th. place with 11 points.

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Cork players, Damian O'Driscoll and Peter Quinn, and they also took advantage of the non-attendance of many of the top-ranked players to significantly increase their points totals.

 

 
 

Sean Marshall is still on top with 30 points closely followed by John Elder on 28.

 

 

Sharon O'Brien (left with Denise) moved ahead of her nearest rivals on the Ladies' Rankings when she defeated Denise Cassidy in the final of the Ladies' Championship.  

 

The beaten semi-finalists were Mary Rowley and Maeve O'Connor.

The beaten semi-finalists in this event were Tipperary players James Gearon and Jason Hahessy.

 

 

 

 

Maureen is Back !

 

Maureen Kelly from Carlow won Round Three of the 2009 Ireland Ladies' Championship when she defeated Caroline Breen {Galway} on a 4-2 scoreline at O'Shea's Hotel, Tramore.

 

In the semi-finals Maureen defeated Sharon O'Brien 3-1 while Caroline had a 3-2 win over Susan McKenna.

In the Men's Championship John Elder had a 6-3 victory over Benny Grace in the final.    The beaten semi-finalists in this event were Connie Finnan and Sean Marshall.

 

John Elder came close to winning the 9-Dart Jackpot missing Double Twelve for the elusive finish.

  

Another big entry for the Youths' Championship with 40 players battling it out on the day.    Victory went to Martin Heneghan who defeated Mark Finneran 3-1 in the decider.

 

In the semi-finals Martin beat Paddy Meaney and Mark eliminated Dean Forde.   The Prize Fund on the day was € 3,510 bringing the overall total over the first three rounds up to a record € 11,090.

 

The Jackpot for a 9-Dart check-out goes up to € 600 for Round Four in Clonmel.

 

 

Marshall Top of the Rankings     

 

After losing to Daryl Gurney in the final of Round One Sean Marshall moved into top position on the 2009 Ireland Rankings List with a magnificent performance in the second round at Abbeyleix Manor Hotel in County Laois.

 

A record entry of 224 players competed in Round Two and with 150 of the top male players  in the country in the line-up it was not going to be an easy competition to win.

 

 

Martin Murphy was very impressive in defeating Anto McCracken, Dary Gurney and Shane O'Connor en route to the final while in the other half of the draw Sean Marshall was equally impressive with a 6-1 victory over John Elder in the semi-finals.     Marshall captured the first prize of € 1,200 with a 6-4 win in the decider.

 

44 players competed in the Youths' event with Paddy Meaney (right) coming out on top with a 3-0 victory over Dean Forde in the final.      The beaten semi-finalists were Thomas Concannon and Ryan Maher.

 

 

The Ladies' title went to Sharon O'Brien who defeated Maeve O'Connor 4-0 in the final while the beaten semi-finalists were Caroline Breen and Kathleen Doherty.

 

John Elder came closest to winning the 9-dart Jackpot when he hit seven consecutive treble 20's and narrowly missing the 57.

 

The Jackpot now goes up tp  € 500 for Round Three in Tramore on January 10th.

Daryl Gurney and Denise Cassidy won their respective competitions in Round One of the 2009 Ireland Players' Championships at Springhill Court Hotel in Kilkenny on October 18th.

 

A total of 177 players competed on the day in the Men's, Ladies' and Youths' Championships.

 

The reigning champion, Daryl Gurney, won his event in great style with wins over Steve McDonnell,  Brian Cathcart and John O'Shea before defeating Sean Marshall 6-1 in the final.

 

Marshall had eliminated Garrett Gray and John Elder in the final stages.
