November 2003.

 

The Three Horse Shoes caused a major upset in Cork City darts when they won

the Cork Charity Cup 3-a-side competition at Ardmanning House.

Competing in the 3rd. Division of the Cork City and District League the Horse Shoes

were complete outsiders on the night but their trio of John Kiely, Gary Walsh

and Billy Whyte were in exceptional form and they captured the title with a hard-fought

3-2 win over the Arches Bar in the final.

Kay O'Carroll hit two maximum 180's en route to winning the ladies' singles. Stephen O'Connor won his second county-ranked competition in a six-week period when he defeated John O'Shea in the final of the 'Tash' Madden Memorial Trophy.

 

Nicola O'Donovan defeated Sharon Buckley in the ladies' decider. James Dowdall won the youths' under-17 title while Ryan Courtney won the under-13 competition.

 

The Brass Razoo from Clonakilty won the Mid-West 3-a-side tournament with victory

over the Millwheel (Kinsale) in the final. Claire O'Donovan won the ladies' singles.

In the Cobh League the Village Inn 'A' team defeated the Quarry Cock 'A' in the final

of the Jack Doyle Shield (Div.1). The score was 4-2 and Dave Donachie was the hero

for the winners with a 115 check-out to clinch the title.

 

In the final of Div. 2 the Wolfe Tone won the Daunt Shield with a 4-2 victory over the

Anchor Bar.

 

Eddie Cull continued his quest to secure enough rankings points to ensure his place

on the Republic of Ireland team next season when he travelled to the 'Big Smoke' for

the Dublin Open and the INDO Irish Masters.

 

He reached the semi-finals of the Dublin Open where he lost to the eventual winner,

Aodhgan O'Neill (Cavan), and he picked up another valuable point in the Masters by

reaching the last sixteen.

 

The Capwell Bar retained the Mick Fowler Memorial Trophy when they defeated the

Roisin Dubh Bar in the final of Division (1) of the Cork City and District League.

The Goblet won the Liam Downey Memorial Trophy with a victory over the Arches (1)

in the 2nd. Division final while the Three Horse Shoes continued their good run with a

win over the Angler's Bar in the 3rd. Division decider. 

 

Nicola O'Donovan reached the final of the Ladies' Singles in the Limerick Open where

she lost to the Irish number one, Maureen Kelly (Carlow) and on the last day of the

month she reached the semi-finals of the Ladies' Singles at the Mayo Open.

 

 

October 2003

Cork players travelled in force to O'Shea's Hotel, Tramore, for the annual Autumn Festival at

the start of the month and as usual they had their fair share of success.

 

John Paul Dowdall was very impressive in the Men's Open Singles with some fine performances

to reach the final where he lost out to Jack McKenna (Kildare).

 

Nicola O'Donovan was also in top form reaching the final of the Mixed Pairs with Richie McMahon and going out of the Ladies' Open Singles in the quarter-finals.

Nicola's performances over the year earned her the Tramore 'Player of the Year' Award.

 

The Cull brothers, Eddie and Steven, recorded a double victory in the Cork County 'Gold Cup'

competition on October 19th. when they captured the men's and youths' titles, respectively.

Sandra Ahern won the ladies' title while Niall O'Donovan won the youths' u-13 event.

With one county-ranked competition remaining Joe Collins is on top of the Men's Rankings

ahead of Ciaran Feiriteur while Sharon Buckley is leading the Ladies' Rankings.

Steven Cull has now moved into top spot on the Youths' List.

 

The Cull family were on the road again over the October Bank Holiday Weekend as they

continued their assault on the INDO Rankings Lists at the Rynn Valley Classic in Mohill.

Eddie and Nicola were beaten in the final of the Mixed Pairs on Saturday night while on

Sunday Eddie reached the semis of the Men's Singles, Nicola was knocked out of the Ladies'

Singles in the quarter-finals and Steven went out in the semis of the Youths' Singles.

Eddie Cull from Cork City started a busy September schedule by retaining the Tom

O'Sullivan Memorial Shield at Ardmanning House on Friday, September 5th. and on the following Sunday he reached the quarter-finals of his section of the Irish Qualifiers of the Paddy Power World Grand Prix.

 

On the weekend of September 13th/14th. he travels to Ballinasloe to compete in the INDO Open at the Gateway Hotel and on the following weekend he will be heading

east for the Wexford Open.    France is his next stop at the end of the month for the French Open in Epinal.

Nicola Keeps it in the Family

 

Nicola O'Donovan from Cork City has been called up for the Republic of Ireland Ladies' team for

the forthcoming World Cup in France thus completing a unique family hat-trick.  Nicola's boyfriend, Eddie Cull, received his first 'cap' for the Republic's men's team against Northern Ireland last May while Eddie's brother, Steven, has played for the youths' team for the past two years.

 

The trio have also been members of their respective Cork teams that won the Munster and Irish Inter-Counties Championships during the past three seasons.

Nicola's rise to fame has been meteoric as she has been playing darts for only two years.    She reached the final of the Tipperary Open last November and was a key member of the Cork Ladies' team this year.

 

She has captured two Cork County titles in recent months and has climbed into second position on the current INDO Rankings List.

New Venue for County Singles

The Fir Tree Lounge Bar in Watergrasshill is the venue for the Cork County Men's Singles

Championship on Sunday, August 24th.

 

The Fir Tree is situated just ten miles from Cork City on the main Dublin road and it has been

totally renovated by it's new owners making it an ideal venue for major competitions.

 

The event on August 24th. will be the first county-ranked competition of the new season and

all of the top throwers from around the county are expected to be in attendance.

 

The area around Watergrasshill has a strong darting tradition with some very good teams

competing in the Fermoy and District League and the local players will be out in force to

prove that they are worthy of a place on the county panel.

 

Entries for the competition will be accepted at the venue from 12.30pm on the day and the

players will toe the oche from 1.30pm.

 

Cork Players at the National Championships

 

Cork players were out in force at the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork for the Irish National Championships on June 21st/22nd and their presence swelled the entries to record levels.

 

Almost seventy Cork players competed and while they did not capture any of the titles on offer they did produce many top performances to keep the local fans happy.

 

Jason Roche was our best performer in the Youths' Singles reaching the semi-finals where he lost out to the eventual winner, Jason Cullen from Wexford.

 

Jason Kavanagh reached the quarter-finals of the Men's Singles having defeated another Cork player, John Paul Dowdall, in the last sixteen.

 

Four of our ladies were in the prize money in their singles event with Kay O'Carroll going the furthest. She was unlucky to lose 2-3 to the Irish No.1 Maureen Kelly (Carlow), in the semi-finals.   Sandra Ahern, Anne O'Sullivan and Nicola O'Donovan reached the quarter-finals.
