Great
News for Cork Darts !
The Professional Darts
Corporation {PDC} has announced a new World Women's
Darts Championship and Cork has been selected to
host the Irish Qualifying competition for this major
event.
The Qualifiers will be
held on Saturday, May 22nd., at the Silver Springs
Moran Hotel, Tivoli, Cork, in conjunction with the
Maytime Darts Festival and two Irish players will
qualify on the day to compete in the last 32 of the
World Championship which will have a prize fund of
Stg. £ 30,000 and a top prize of Stg. £ 10,000 for
the Champion.
In addition the final of
the World Championship will be screened live on Sky
Sports TV before the final of the Men's World
Matchplay in Blackpool on July 25th.
The
Silver Springs Moran Hotel in Tivoli will be the
venue for a new major darts event on the weekend of
May 22nd./ 23rd., 2010. The
Maytime Darts Festival will have a prize fund of €
6,000 on offer with five separate events on the
programme.
There will be separate
Men's and Ladies' Doubles competitions on Saturday
at 8.00pm while on Sunday Men's, Ladies' and Youths'
Under-18 Singles events will be on the agenda.

Robbie Leahy from the Rob
Roy Bar won his third Division {3} Singles title in
just over twelve months when he defeated Steven
O'Leary {Tory Top} 3-1 in the final at Ardmanning
House in Togher. The beaten semi-finalists on
the night were Dave Forde {Tory Top} and Alan Barry
{Kirby's Korner} and Alan also recorded the highest
check-out of 108.

The Horse Shoe Inn and
the Harp Bar {1} teams won the finals of their
respective divisions of the Maher Sports/ Unicorn
5-a-side League titles at Ardmanning House.In
Division {1} the Horse Shoe defeated table-toppers,
Huntsman {1}, 3-0 in their semi-final clash while
the Abbey defeated the Tory Top in the other semi.
The final was a very close affair with the Horse
Shoe just getting there on a 3-2 scoreline.

Harp Bar {1} - Winners of
Division {2} |
Division {2} was won by
the Harp Bar {1} who defeated Harp {2} in the semis
and the Ferry Arms in the final. The other
beaten semi-finalists in this division were the
Southside.

The Rob Roy Bar captured
the Jery Quinn Memorial Trophy for the first time
when they defeated Tory Top {2} 3-2 in a
closely-fought final at the Harp Lounge Bar in
Pouladuff, Cork. In the semi-finals, which were
played on the same night, the Rob Roy defeated the
Brown Derby {2} while the Tory Top recorde a victory
over Kirby's Korner.

Championships at Ardmanning
Ardmanning House in Togher was the venue on
Monday night, January 25th., for the annual
CDPA Championships which were generously
sponsored by the home venue.
Players from Divisions {1} and {2} of the
Maher Sports/ Unicorn League competed in the
3-a-side Championship while players from the
3rd. Division competed in their annual
Doubles competition.
24 teams competed in the 3-a-side event and
it ended up with two teams each from
neighbours, Horse Shoe and Tory Top,
battling it out in the semi-finals. Matches
were the best of 3 legs of 801 in the
semi-finals and Tory Top {1} won 2 - 0
against the Horse Shoe {1} while the Horse
Shoe {2} got the better of the Tory Top {2}
in the other semi on a 2-1 scoreline.

The Horse Shoe team of Maurice O'Donovan,
Eric Dunlea and Robbie Elliott took the
honours in the final with a 3-1 victory over
John Kiely, Alan Ramsell and Kevin Ward from
the Tory Top,
Paudie Dineen from the Goblet hit the
highest check-out of 115.

Twenty pairs competed in the Division {3}
Doubles with victory going to Billy Kirby
and Alan Barry from Kirby's Korner who
defeated Alan Walsh and David Forde from the
Tory Top in the final.
The beaten semi-finalists were Fionn
Kearney/ Christy Kirsten and Noel Cullinane/Rob
Kelly and the prize for the highest
check-out went to Dan Pepper who had the
best finish of 102.
Cork
Players Prominent in Tramore
As usual Cork players
travelled in big numbers to the annual Tramore
Winter
Gala on January
15th/16th/17th. and they made their presence
felt in all competitions over the weekend.
The Gala kicked off
on Friday night with Doubles events and the
ladies' competition was dominated by the Cork
players with two pairs from the Rebel County
battling it out in the final.

The honours went to
Bronagh Mallon and Kay O'Carroll from the city
who defeated Liz Shanahan and Caroline Conway
from East Cork in the final.

In the Sharon Rafter
Memorial Cup Kay O'Carroll was unlucky in losing
3 - 4 in the final to Sharon O'Brien {Kilkdare}
who was winning the competition for a record
fifth occasion. Bronagh Mallon was beaten in the
quarter-finals of this competition.
Kevin McDonnell and
Nick Moore were the best of the Cork players in
the Men's Singles as they reached the
quarter-finals of the O'Shea Cup and Dean Forde
and Paul Donovan were beaten at the same stage
of the Tramore Youths' Cup.
Seven Cork Players in
Top 32
After Round Three of
the 2010 Ireland Players' Championship, which
was played in Tramore on January 16th., seven
Cork players now appear on the Men's Rankings
List with a few more knocking on the door for
places in the Grand Finals.
John Paul Dowdall was
the best of the Cork players in Tramore -
reached the semis where he lost to the
top-ranked player, Shane O'Connor.
Martin Cotter was
impressive on his debut in the Championship when
he reached the quarter-finals before losing 3-4
to Dowdall.
Kay O'Carroll and
Dean Forde both had quarter-final placings in
the Ladies' and Youths' Championships,
respectively, and they are also well-placed to
reach the Grand Finals in June.
Round Four of the
Ireland Players' Championship will be held in
Clonmel on Sunday, February 28th.
