Kay O'Carroll into Grand Finals
While none of the Cork players performed very
well in Round Five of the Ireland Players' Championship in Newbridge on March 1st., Kay
O'Carroll had done more than enough to hold on to a Top 8 spot in the Rankings List
and a place in the Grand Finals in August.
Damian O'Driscoll and Johnny Donovan are still
in 2nd. and 4th. places, respectively, on the Men's Rankings List while Ryan Courtney
(right) is
still very much involved at No.3 in the Youths.
There was no joy for the Cork teams in the Irish
Inter-Counties Youths' Championships in Kilkenny on March 8th.
Roscommon defeated
Kilkenny in the final.
In the CDPA 5-a-side Leagues the Horse Shoe
defeated the Millwheel in the final of the 1st. Division while the Arches were crowned
Division {2} Champions with a win over Harp {2}.
The Jerry Quinn Memorial Trophy {Div.3}
was
won by the Harp {1} who defeated BallyReds {2} in the final and Dan Pepper (right) from the Deanrock
won the 3rd. Division Singles title.
The CDPA Cork City Challenge Cup got underway in
March and it will continue on a home and away basis throughout the month of April.
Players' Championship Win
for Damien O'Driscoll

Damien O'Driscoll moved into second
place in the Ireland Rankings List when he defeated Benny Grace from Kilkenny in final of Round Four
of the 2008 Ireland Players' Championship at the Two Mile Inn
Hotel in Limerick on February 3rd.
Peter Quinn and John O'Shea were
also in top form on the day in reaching the quarter-finals.
In the Ladies' Championship Kay
O'Carroll was beaten in the semi-final while Ashling Feiriteur
and Nicola O'Donovan lost in the
quarter-finals.
Ryan Courtney had another good
tournament in the Youths' Championship and he was unlucky to
lose to an in-form Paddy Meaney {Kilkenny}
in the final.
It was a bad weekend for the Cork
men's and ladies' teams in the INDO Inter-Counties Championships
in Castlebar with both teams going out
in the quarter-finals. Peter Quinn was the best of the Cork
players at the 'Sets and Legs' Tournament in Shirley's Bar,
Kilkenny, on Sunday, February 17th. He lost to
Northern Ireland's John Elder in the quarter-finals.
The league stage of the CDPA
5-a-side Leagues were concluded during February leaving the way
clear for the semi-finals and finals of all
three divisions in the first two weeks of March. The draw for the Cork City Challenge
Cup was made at Ardmanning House on February 19th. and 1st.
Round
matches will be played home and away
on March 18th. and March 25th.
As
usual Cork players travelled in big numbers to O'Shea's Hotel in Tramore for
the annual Winter Gala
which incorporated Round Three of the 2008 Bruce Betting Ireland Players'
Championship.
On
the Friday night young Ryan Courtney teamed up with Dublin's Sean McArdle to
reach the final
of
the Men's Doubles competition.
They
went 3-0 up against Shane O'Connor and Anto Caldwell before the Dublin duo
hit back to win the
next four legs and the title.
Aisling Feiriteur and Sharon Buckley were beaten in the final of the Ladies'
Doubles by Sharon O'Brien and
Susan McKenna while Liz Shanahan and Caroline Conway reached the
quarter-finals.
In
the Players' Championship on Saturday Damien O'Driscoll enhanced his growing
reputation by
reaching the semi-finals while John O'Shea and Johnny Donovan were beaten in
the quarter-finals.
Ryan
Courtney and Stephen Nyhan reached the semi-finals of the Youths'
Championship and Nicola
O'Donovan was beaten at the same stage of the Ladies' Championship.
Aisling Feiriteur and Kay O'Carroll were beaten in the last eight of this
event. In
the Singles competitions on Sunday Damien O'Driscoll and Joe Collins were
beaten in the quarter-finals
of
the O'Shea Cup and Nicola O'Donovan was beaten in the quarter-finals of the
Sharon Rafter Cup. Dean
Forde and Paul Donovan were impressive in the Tramore Youths' Cup.
On
January 25th., the Cork Darts Players' Association organised their annual
3-a-side championship at
Ardmanning House and the winners were Jim O'Callaghan, James Murphy and
Pakie O'Donovan.
The
runners-up were Anthony Murphy, Alan Ramsell and John O'Donovan.

A
Doubles competition for Division {3} players was also organised on the night
and the winners were
Adrian O'Donovan and Tony Manning who defeated Billy Shannon and Hugh
Elliott in the final.
Kay
O'Carroll defeated Ann Watkinson in the final of the Ladies' Singles.
