John Paul Defeats World Champion

Former National Youths Champion, John Paul Dowdall, defeated World Champion, John Part, in a charity exhibition at Ardmanning House.

The event was organised by Darts Aid Charity in aid of the local Marymount Hospice and there was a 'full house' to see the newly- crowned champion take on a selection of the top players in the Cork area.

One of the highlights of the evening was the introduction on stage of the Cork Ladies' team, recent winners of the Irish Inter-Counties Championship.   € 1,700 was raised on the night for the local Hospice.

Our sincere thanks to John Part for an entertaining evening.

Cork Teams in top form at Inter-Counties:

The Cork county teams were in tremendous form at the Irish Inter- Counties Championships in Limerick winning the ladies' title, finishing runners-up in the youths' event and the men going out in the quarter- finals to the eventual champions, Donegal.

The event was staged in the plush surroundings of the South Court Hotel and with twenty two counties competing the hotel was buzzing for the weekend.

The men eliminated Sligo and Westmeath in the preliminary rounds but they failed to take their chances against Donegal and they lost 3-7.

The youths' team had many inexperienced players in their squad but they showed great determination as they reached the final with some excellent displays.   Mayo were experienced campaigners, however, and they lifted the title with a 4-1 victory.

The Cork ladies defied the critics once again with an excellent displey in the 'red jersey' as they defeated the title-holders Mayo in the quarter-finals and then came from 1-3 down to Carlow to fashion a brilliant 4-3 win to set themselves up with a clash with Sligo in the final. Cork again went behind in this match but in typical style they fought back to take the title with a 4-2 victory.

Cork Players in Tramore

Jason Roche became the fourth Cork player in succession to win the Tramore Youths' Cup at the Winter Gala 2003.

Cork players made their presence felt at the Winter Darts Gala in Tramore with some fine performances in all of the competitions.

On Saturday John Harte and Declan O'Sullivan were defeated in the final of the Men's Doubles while Bronagh Mallon and Anne O'Sullivan reached the final of the women's event.

Sunday was Singles' day and again we were well represented with four players, Eddie Cull, Brendan Corcoran, Joe Collins and John Harte, reaching the quarter-finals.   Cull, however, was the only one to advance but he was unfortunate to come up against an in-form Jack McKenna in the final and he lost 0-4.

Sharon Buckley was our best player in women's singles. She went out in the semi-finals to Sandy Ashton  (Limerick )

Our youth players stole the limelight with Jason Roche and Aidan O'Sullivan reaching the final from an entry of more than forty players.  Jason upstaged his more experienced opponent as he captured the Tramore Cup with a 3-2 victory.

Jason and Eddie go Dutch!

Cork county players, Jason Kavanagh and Eddie Cull, are off on their travels again in February when they head for Veldhoven in the Netherlands to compete in the Dutch Open.

We wish them well as they hope to emulate their performances in the British Open last September when they both reached the last 64 in the Open Singles.

Cork County Darts:

Our county teams were in superb form at the Munster Inter-Counties Challenge in Limerick winning three out of the four competitions on the programme.

In the Men's A competition, played on a round robin basis, Cork started well with a 10-2 win over Tipperary but they lost their second match 5-7 to Limerick.   They rallied well, however, and trounced Clare 11-1 and finished with a 7-5 victory over Waterford.

The 'B' team won all of their matches to win their event while the ladies dropped only one game throughout the day for a convincing win.

There were many new faces on the youths' squad but they put on a spirited show and finished runners-up to Clare in their event.

All of the Cork teams are now gearing up for the Irish Championships in February.

Cork City Darts:

The final sessions in the Cork City and District League were played at Ardmanning House with the last four teams from the three divisions in attendance.

The Capwell Bar retained the Mick Fowler Memorial Trophy with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Millwheel. The beaten semi-finalists were Jim Cashman's and An Ciotog  (1 ) Ye Olde Tavern  (2 ) took the 2nd. division title and the Liam Downey Memorial Trophy with
3-2 wins against Forde's  (1 ) in the semis and Tory Top in the final. Beer Garden  (1 ) were the other semi-finalists

.
BallyReds  (1 ) captured their first silverware when they defeated An Ciotog (2 ) in the final of Division  (3 ) on a 3-1 scoreline.

East Cork Darts:

The first three league competitions of the season in East Cork have produced shock results with the fancied teams losing out in their respective finals.

The Thatch  (Killeagh ) won Division  (1 ) of the Heineken League with a 4-1 victory over Sean McGrath's Bar  (Ballycotton ). County player Brendan Corcoran was McGraths' only winner.   Harbour Point were odds-on to lift the 2nd. Division title but they had no answers on finals' night for a youthful Colbert's team who won the title with a 4-2 victory.    The ladies from Johnny Mac's  (Rostellan ) outscored a very strong Barry's team from Castlemartyr in their final with Tricia McCarthy being voted 'Player of the Match'.
